In 1985, Super Mario Bros appeared for the NES the first Mario game with the well-known 2D jump -‘n-run formula. This formula persecuted Nintendo for some time and brought the chubby plumber to the top of the video game world. More than 10 years later, the company decided to take a new way with her IP and the super-mario role-playing games (RPGS) were born.

The first one appeared in 1996 in Japan and North America and wanted to clearly clear with his name what was about: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. However, until the first role-playing game in the Mario-robe managed to Europe, it took four more years. Finally, in 2001 Paper Mario for the N64 also appeared on our market. With this game, a series was born, which is probably so controversial to this day like no other.

A total of six parts have been released until today and all have their own essence, which every game should make something special. In this special we look at all so previously published Paper Mario parts and analyze how the series has changed – both positive and negative.

Paper Mario – a blank sheet

Originally under the name Super Mario RPG 2 developed and in Japan already published in 2000 as Super Mario Story, Paper Mario marked the beginning of the series. Nintendo decided to drive another graphic for the role-playing games of their main banking shot and another concept than the Jump -‘n Run offshoots to withdraw them from the main row.

The characters and objects were designed as paper and were two-dimensional, while the game worlds were built three-dimensionally. The paper aspect was an important feature on which many puzzles and animations built. This concept was new to the video game market and for the developer studio Intelligent Systems it was the first Mario game out of her hand. So the success of the game was not predestined.

It’s not just about freeing Princess Peach from the claws of King Bowser, who has taken them together with their castle again, the story is extended by another story strand. In this, Mario receives the task of saving the seven large stars, which are held by Bowser, who made the power of the Star Staff in different areas of the fungus kingdom. Only with their power Mario can manage to get to the flying castle of the nasty Koopa king, to defeat him in the fight and to free Peach.

Of course, the storytellingly is nothing groundbreaking, but a nice variety to the ever-like “Peach-Wan-kidnapped-and-du-you-save-saving” history.

Paper Mario also differs from his 2D predecessors at the gameplay. Since it is a RPG, the struggles are much more extensive here. The opponents move like Mario on the map. When contacting you, the setting changes to a kind of arena, in which Mario now cleans up round-based with its attackers.

After each fight, he receives role-playing typical experience in the form of star points. When you have collected enough of it, Marios Level rises and you can improve its values.

The RISE and FALL of the Paper Mario Series!

There are several choices in the fighting. In addition to the attacks per jump or by hammer, there are still the possibilities to use items or start an escape attempt. Over time, Mario also learns new skills that can be used in combat, be it through the power of the liberated stars or by the partners Mario meet in the course of his adventure and supporting him on his journey.

For each attack that is running, it is important to make the right timing. Only plump use a jump and wait, in the fewest cases leads to success. You have to press the right buttons at the right moment to make the maximum damage.

It also plays a role which equipment carries Mario. Because his shoes or hammers can be improved over time. There are also the orders that Mario can be created. These orders give him new skills, but they need a certain number of ordencies. These can also be increased by level-ups.

Another untypical innovation was the characters that MARIO meets. The partners and all other characters have their very own personality and differ visually from each other. This gives the game world their own charm, who has thrilled the fans at that time as today.

Paper Mario has only the bounce with the original Mario formula only. This did not significantly reduce its success. The RPG genre was popular and Mario anyway. Overall, the game has sold 1.38 million times and the reviews were very convincing. Nintendo did so well to develop a successor.

Paper Mario: The legend of the Eongentor – the scale of the entire row

After the success of the first paper Mario, Nintendo wanted to establish the series and brought three years later a successor to the market. Paper Mario: The legend from the Eongentor is not very different from its predecessor.

The combat system is largely the same. It is still important to take the right timing with his attacks to make as much harm as possible. The special attacks, partners, items and orders are sometimes different from the first offshoot.

Storytechnically Paper Mario 2 is quite different from the standard. The main point of view of the game is the city of Rohlingen, in which it is teeming in front of Ganoven. Under the city is the legendary Eongentor, behind which a great treasure should be hidden.

Princess Peach acquires a treasure map that she sends to Mario and asks him to come to blilling. Shortly thereafter, she is kidnapped… again. But not by Bowser, but from the crucions, a strange group of villains that Peach needs as an exchange for a demon that is locked behind the Eaoneentor. So Mario goes up with the Gumba Student Gumbrina in search of the seven star jewels, with which they want to open the gate and save Peach.

As in the first part Mario also meets different characters, which accompany him at his adventure. Some of these characters also have their own small story strings that fit into the main story. This makes the game through and through alive.

After each chapter end, you even have the opportunity to play short sequences as Bowser or Peach and experience the story from your eyes. In the first part that was also possible with Peach, but in Paper Mario 2, these story strands have significantly more meaning and charm. Even a love story between the princess and a computer is transmitted to the player.
