Korean mathematician Heo Jun won the Fieldls Medal, a professor of Princeton University. It is regarded as a great place in the field of basic science.

The International Mathematics Federation (IMU) announced on May 5 (local time) that four people including Professor Heo Joon were selected as the Fields award at the International Mathematical Congress (ICM) held in Helsinki, Finland.

Professor Huh won the Fields Award for his contributions to a number of challenges in the field of union theory using the major season. His research contributes to the development of various applications such as information and communication, semiconductor design, traffic, logistics, machine learning, and statistical physics.

Together with Professor Huh, Marina Via Jossa, Professor of Lausanne Federal Institute of Technology, Dubinyl Copin French School of High School, and Professor of Oxford University in the UK, James Meinad, were selected.

Fields

The Fields Award is a prizes of the International Mathematics Federation once every four years of young mathematicians under the age of 40 and awarded to the future scholars. There is no mathematics sector in the Nobel Prize, and is recognized as the Nobel Prize in Mathematics. Professor Huh was 39 years old this year, this was the last chance for the Fields Award.

Professor Huh was recognized for his work that solved the long-term mathematics ‘Read’s Conjecture’ and ‘ROTA Conjecture’. In particular, it was highly regarded that the problem was solved by creatively combining the methodology of the algebraic and union theory that seemed to be related to each other.

He was born in the United States and returned home when he was two years old, and he was elementary and middle school and university education in Korea. He graduated from Seoul National University, Physics, and received a master’s degree in mathematics from Seoul National University. He then received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Michigan through the University of Illinois Avana Champagne.

In his childhood, he did not show talent in mathematics, and he did not major in mathematics in the undergraduate, but he started out late and surprised his academic world. Before he studied mathematics, he dreamed of becoming a poet or a science journalist. During his attending Seoul National University, he was invited as a professor at Seoul National University and met with Japanese mathematician Hironaka Hisuke, a Japanese mathematician who was studying in Korea.

Professor Heo Joon said, Mathematics is a process of understanding my own prejudice and limitations, and I am more commonly curious about how human beings can think and how deep. I feel deeply grateful because I have a meaningful award for being happy.

Geum Jong-hae, chairman of the Korean Mathematics Society, said, Professor Heo Joon won the Fields Award, the best mathematician’s honor, and in February of this year, the International Mathematics Federation raised the national grade of Korean mathematics to the highest level of 5 groups. The science has won the Fields Award, so the Nobel Prize will soon continue.
